From July 2016, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will be rolled out across Australian states and territories, including Queensland. NDIS provides people-with-disabilities to have choice and control over their supports and services, and be funded for their necessary disability supports.
Debbie Douglas, a physiotherapist and a mother of an Asperger’s son, said that this was a tremendous opportunity as there were no health provisions for people with Asperger’s syndrome before the introduction of the NDIS. The funding received from NDIS has allowed her to hire a life coach for her son to foster independence and maintain an age-appropriate lifestyle. She added that NDIS is beneficial not only for people with disabilities and their families, but also for practitioners as it provides more in-depth assessments, conducts quality screenings, and ensures that the programs and therapies are specific, individualised, and effective.
