Saturated fats and refined sugar, which are often found in junk food, have harmful effects for the brain. In a recent publication in the “British Journal of Nutrition”, researchers analysed data from 185 research papers. They found that Omega-3 fish oil may be able to stall these effects.
High-fat diets increase the circulation of inflammatory molecules and a type of fat called triglycerides. These prevent the production of hormones which protect neurons and stimulate their growth. It appears that in studies with animal models, omega 3s interferes with the production of these inflammatory molecules and suppressing triglycerides, and returns nerve growth factors to normal, the scientists conclude.
