Fungal nails

Fungal nails, also known as onychomycosis are a fungal infection that affects the toenails. The fungal infection can cause the nail plate to become thickened, discoloured, and brittle, and in some cases can also cause the nail to become deformed.

Fungal nails are most commonly caused by a group of fungi called dermatophytes, however, they can also be caused by yeast or mould. The infection can be difficult to treat and in some cases can leave at-risk people more susceptible to further infections.

A podiatrist can help with the management of fungal nails by recommending topical antifungal treatments. These treatments are applied to the surface of the nail to eliminate the fungal infection. These treatments options may take several weeks or months to be effective and fully remove the infection. A podiatrist will also recommend preventative measures to stop the spread and recurrence of the fungal infection.

My Rehab Team has mobile and in clinic podiatry services that can help you. Contact us on 1300465734 or info@myrehabteam.com.au for more information or feel free to peruse our wait time and service region pages (both have links to our referral forms).
