Neuromas and bursitis are common causes of pain in the foot particularly in the forefoot. A neuroma is when the nerve thickens and is most common between the toes or the metatarsal bones in the foot. Typically, neuromas present with symptoms of pain, tingling, numbness, or a burning sensation. Bursitis is inflammation of the bursa, a small fluid filled sack that helps protect different tissues and anatomical structures.
Symptoms are similar to those of a neuroma and often times the bursitis and neuromas are found together due to the inflammation in the area. Bursitis can be the cause of forefoot pain and can also be found on the heel bone where the Achilles tendon attaches. Treatment options include offloading and orthotics, footwear advice, rest, medication, and in severe persistent cases surgery may be indicated.
