It is a known fact that physical activity helps in controlling diabetes, but recent studies have shown that it is possible to get the same positive results of physical exercise from passive stretching.
Passive static stretching is the activity that results when sustained tension develops in our muscles due to an external force. It produces positive results without the accompanying physical strain to the body. Many studies have suggested that by passively stretching the skeletal muscles, it is possible to reduce glucose levels in the blood thus benefiting Type 2 diabetics and also help lower diabetes risk.
Passive stretching involves minimum use of effort on the part of the patient who feels relaxed as a result of the stretches. This is because the stretches are done in a convenient sitting or lying down position.
Passive stretching exercises are advantageous for people with Type 2 diabetes, helping to reduce glucose levels. A recent experimental study published in the Journal of Physiotherapy has shown that passive static stretching of the skeletal muscles, may be a good substitute for physical exercise in order to bring down the glucose levels in the blood.
The study was conducted on Type 2 diabetic patients with a sedentary lifestyle on 2 days with a gap of 3 days in between. When they were put through a passive stretching exercise for 20 minutes, their blood sample showed a decrease in glucose levels. The study provides strong evidence that passive stretching has a positive influence on blood glucose levels.
So if active physical exercise is not an option for you, perhaps passive static stretching could be a viable alternative to counter the negative effects of diabetes. Having a passive stretching exercise program is highly recommended and can help diabetic patients control/prevent diabetes and maintain better health for minimal cost.
