About two-thirds of stroke sufferers across the globe survive and undergo rehabilitation. Even though rehabilitation can not reverse damage to the brain due to stroke, it certainly helps the individuals to achieve optimal independence and the best possible quality of life.

Stroke causes disabilities like sensory loss or dysfunction. Apart from losing motor skills such as coordination of the hands or legs and problems with speech, the patient may lose the ability to feel pain and touch and also the recognition of one’s own limbs.  Not only is sensory loss a safety risk, it impacts greatly on how well someone can move their body and take care of themselves.

The somatosensory system helps us execute everyday tasks, communicate and interacte with the outside world. This crucial system is commonly compromised after a stroke, so therapy becomes essential to help stroke patients retrain their sensory awareness, and relearn self care and other life skills.

In the past, post-stroke rehabilitation has often focused on the improvement of motor functions while sensory loss is overlooked.  Recent studies have demonstrated that the SENse program developed by the Leanne Carey from the Monash University, Victoria, addressing sensory impairment is effective in improving sensory awareness and thereby the overall quality of life of the stroke sufferer.
