Stroke and Speech Pathology

Stroke affects communication and interrupt a person’s daily routine. During rehabilitation, a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) can help patients re-build their communication skills.

Stroke and Speech PathologyStrokes occur when the brain is deprived of oxygen due to a clogged or burst artery.  Post-stroke affects, such as communication difficulties, can interrupt a person’s daily routine.  During rehabilitation, a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) can help patients re-build their communication skills. They can get them involved in group therapy sessions, in which they can practice speaking with other stroke survivors. They also create role-plays for patients to practice community skills, such as answering the phone or ordering a meal. Based on what type of communication difficulty a patient is experiencing, strategies will be implemented to help with conversation initiation, turn-taking, retaining word retrieval and maintaining conversation topics. In order to meet your language/cognitive needs, a SLP may also work with employers or education specialists to modify your work/environment.
