No doubt if you’ve suffered from a stroke you will have made the hospital your second home. But there comes a time when you feel the need to be more proactive with your rehab. This blog will introduce Self Management and how it can work for you.
Self Management simply means taking charge of your health and wellbeing. Your average person does it automatically – sets goals, prioritises etc, but for stroke survivors it can be a bit overwhelming, “where do I start”, due to the likelyhood of starting their lives all over again.
So that’s when programs like STEPS and Bridges comes in. STEPS (Skills To Able People & communities) coordinated by ABIOS, http://www.health.qld.gov.au/abios/steps/, targeted at people who have had a brain injury. Often there will be a “peer leader” (someone who has had a brain injury themselves) and a healthcare provider who will teach the skills of self management. Another program delivered by My Rehab Team is Bridges for Stroke survivors which is a 1 on 1 coaching program to help unleash the skills of self management from within the individual. http://www.bridges-stroke.org.uk
