Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease, also known as Hereditary Motor and Sensory Neuropathy (HMSN), is a common inherited genetic condition in which the body’s peripheral nervous system is affected. There are already over 50 different types of CMT discovered, with varying symptoms, traits and severities, which is why it often goes undiagnosed. Depending on the type of CMT, sufferers may feel physically and mentally drained, as well as a lack of strength and aches. The main body parts affected are generally the legs, feet, arms and fingers. Family history can help determine whether you have CMT, what type and your probability of passing it onto your children. However, consulting a genetic specialist is advised for a more accurate diagnosis. Although, there is currently no cure for CMT, research shows that stretching and exercising can slow down its progression.
