Techniques before taking Occupational Therapy Driving Assessment

An Occupational Therapist can provide assessment and develop a recovery program for anyone who is currently experiencing difficulties in carrying out their everyday activities due to physical or cognitive limitations.  A rehabilitation program will help you better prepare yourself with the techniques required for the driving assessment and can be tailored to specialised areas such as upper or lower limb therapy, cognitive retraining etc.

My Rehab Team offers OT Driving Assessment Services but we’ve put together some tips to help you prepare for it.

Tips on the Occupational Therapy Driving Assessment

Pre-Assessment Tips

1. Obtain Necessary Documentation
Ensure you have all required documentation, including medical clearance, the appropriate driver’s license/permit, and relevant health information. Having these documents ready beforehand can streamline the assessment process.

2. Communication is Key
Openly discuss any concerns or questions with the occupational therapist to ensure a comprehensive assessment tailored to individual needs.

3. Mental and Physical Preparedness
Stay mentally and physically active in the days leading up to the assessment to enhance cognitive and physical readiness. Try breathing exercises or meditation, or talk to someone who is supportive to help cope with anxiety.

During Assessment Tips

1. Collaborate with the Therapist
Collaborate with the occupational therapist throughout the assessment process, providing feedback and seeking clarification when needed.

2. Stay Calm and Focused
Maintain a calm and focused demeanour during the assessment. Concentrate on the task at hand, follow instructions carefully, and exhibit confidence in your driving abilities.

3. Demonstrate Safe Driving Practices
Adhere to road rules and exhibit safe driving practices throughout the assessment. Signal appropriately, check mirrors regularly, and follow traffic regulations to showcase your commitment to safe driving.

4. Ask for Clarification if Needed
If you are unsure about any instructions or tasks during the assessment, don’t hesitate to ask for clarification. Clear communication with the occupational therapist ensures a better understanding of expectations.

Post-Assessment Tips

1. Follow-Up and Recommendations
After the assessment, carefully review and discuss the feedback provided by the occupational therapist. Understand areas of strength and potential areas for improvement to enhance your driving skills or potential modifications.

2. Maintain Regular Check-ins
Keep in touch with the occupational therapist for follow-up discussions and additional support. Regular check-ins allow you to address any evolving concerns or changes in your driving abilities.
