Excercise Physiology
Exercise physiology is a study of exercise on different people with different health conditions and presentations. Professionals from this field are often found working in local gyms, however, you will be surprised to know that exercise physiologists were the people who have done some of the first and many research on the most effective physical training for people with Multiple sclerosis and other neurological and chronic conditions.
Exercise physiologists are distinct from fitness trainers and instructors (such as personal trainers) or athletic trainers. While these professionals may also assist individuals with exercise, exercise physiologists undergo a more extensive educational path. To become an exercise physiologist, one must complete a minimum of four years of university education, including both a graduate (Bachelor’s) and post-graduate (Master’s) level.
Your exercise physiologist from My Rehab Team helps you to devise an appropriate exercises plan to achieve goals which are relevant to you. She works in close partnership with the rest of the team, in particular the physiotherapist and dietician so that your exercise program is tailored to accommodate for any aches and pains, weakness and overactivity, spasticity and contractures; and augment the effectiveness of your dietary plan.

An exercise physiologist can help you in many ways, including:
Design a safe and effective exercise plan
Create an exercise plan tailored to your individual needs and goals. They can take into account any medical conditions you may have, your fitness level, and your personal preferences to create a plan that is both safe and effective.
Conducting fitness assessments
Evaluate your current fitness level and identify any areas where you may need to improve. They can use a variety of tests to measure your cardiovascular health, strength, flexibility, and other important fitness markers.
Preventing injuries
Help prevent injuries by teaching proper exercise technique and designing an exercise program that is appropriate for your fitness level.
Monitoring progress
Track your progress over time and make adjustments to your exercise program as needed. They can help you set realistic goals and provide encouragement and support to help you stay on track.
Providing education and resources
Provide education and resources to help you learn more about exercise and how it can benefit your health and well-being.
When should I see an exercise physiologist:
- You have a medical condition that requires special attention during exercise
- New to exercise and need guidance
- Looking to improve your fitness or athletic performance
- Want to learn more about exercise and its benefits
