If you are returning home from hospital, have recently had changes in how you are managing living independently at home, an Occupational Therapist can help you! Occupational Therapists (OT’s) are experts in understanding how an injury or disability impacts a person’s daily life and can help to enhance your independence. OT’s pride themselves in being “client centered” and take an individualised approach with each client by assessing your skills and limitations in daily tasks within your home. They may focus on tasks you do in your bathroom, kitchen or anywhere inside or outside your home.
In working with your Occupational Therapist, they may suggest alternative ways of doing things, initiate home modifications or prescribe equipment that can help you to be more independent. For example, if you are finding it difficult to stand up in the shower your OT might have a look at specialised equipment that can help you to shower independently such as a shower chair. A home assessment, by an OT can help you to feel safer in your living space and increase your independence in daily life tasks.
