The act of breathing is achieved by the diaphragm descending and the intercostals or muscles between the ribs contracting causing an increase in volume in the lungs to draw air in. Therefore, when these muscles are weakened, breathing becomes harder which in turn affects one’s activity tolerance and quality of life.
Inspiratory muscle training (IMT) is an exercise program for the strengthening of breathing muscles. It has been shown by researchers to improve lung function and reduce the risk of chest infections in people with a spinal cord injury who have reduced inspiratory muscle strength.
