An Exercise Physiologist is a university qualified health professional who possesses in-depth knowledge of how the body reacts to physical activity. Exercise physiologists specialise in assessing, designing and implementating of exercise programs for medical conditions, injuries and disabilities.

The difference between a Physiotherapist and an Exercise Physiologist is that the latter has completed a degree in exercise science. An exercise physiologist manages conditions by analysing patient’s fitness and improve their health through exercise, while a physiotherapist uses hands-on skills, education, and exercise to diagnose and treat conditions.

Exercise physiologists have varying approaches to improving the health of their patients. Some focus on preventative measures, while others work with individuals who already experiencing issues such as heart disease, diabetes or disabilities.

When should I see an exercise physiologist?

Exercise Physiologists treat a variety of conditions and pathologies, including:

  • Cardiovascular (eg. Cardiovascular Disease and Hypertension)
  • Neurological (Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke, etc.)
  • Musculoskeletal Injuries
  • Cancers
  • Metabolic (Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome)

Exercise Physiologists use exercise to improve clients’ strength and natural physical function in a “hands-off” manner, aiming to help them reach their goals and improve their overall quality of life.

They collaborate with other healthcare professionals to enhance patients’ fitness levels and assist in creating treatment plans for those with medical conditions or disabilities. As many of these conditions require long-term care, it’s essential to comprehend how to maintain good health.
