In our dedicated efforts to serve the dementia community, our speech pathologists Grace and Stacey compiled some videos to provide invaluable insights for carers on communication with those affected by dementia. We have chosen to do the videos in Mandarin as this is the language spoken by some of our staff and a minority group in Australia.
The challenges of communication in dementia are significant. While verbal skills may remain, comprehension and literacy challenges can hinder meaningful interactions. Addressing these challenges through effective communication strategies is essential to maintaining the individual’s sense of identity and connection.
The videos illustrate the application of The MESSAGE framework which is a structured approach to improving interactions, focusing on the following:
1. Maximising Attention: Adjusting the environment to reduce distractions fosters better engagement.
2. Expression and Body Language: Utilising non-verbal communication to enrich the connection.
3. Keep It Simple: Simplifying language used to aid comprehension and interactions.
4. Supporting the Conversation: Providing time and prompts to help maintain the flow of conversation.
5. Assisting Communication with Visual Aids: using Visual aids to help bridge understanding and expression.
6. Getting Their Message: Attentive listening and observation to ensure the grasping of the intended message.
7. Encouraging and Engaging: Creating a positive environment that promotes communication and inclusion.
8. The video serves as a practical demonstration for carers, emphasising the importance of social interactions, mindful engagement, and the value of patience and presence. The MESSAGE communication strategy is helpful to reduce stress and enhance the well-being of both the caregiver and the person with dementia.
We have also compiled a pre-recorded lecture to explain communication and dementia in greater depth. The presentation can be shared upon request.
